The Least of These Prison Ministry
Written by Clif Clifton, member of MacArthur Blvd Baptist Church, on March 27, 2019.
When I became a Christ follower at the age of 31, I had an immediate desire to tell others of Jesus. The problem was I didn’t know how, I was afraid I would say something wrong.
I enrolled in a discipleship class called MasterLife where church member, Nelson McKinney, taught me to spend time in God’s Word, to pray and took me out witnessing. I was able to observe a man who followed the commands of God. It gave me the foundation of leading people to trust and follow Christ. I learned that making disciples is not evangelism. It is teaching people to fear God, to keep His commandments and to follow Him and observe me obeying God.
God wants us to fear Him and nothing else. The wisest man, Solomon, said this at the end of his life, “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil” (Eccl. 12:13-14). That fear is a great dread of displeasing God.
My aim in life is to please my Father and keep His commandments, all of them. God commands us to be witnesses, even to those we are not comfortable with sharing the Gospel. Another command is to go make disciples, “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20).
One way I conquered my fears of talking to people about Jesus is when I began going into prisons with Bill Glass Behind the Walls. The ministry’s mission is to assist the church by equipping and igniting Christians to share their faith with the “least of these.”
I recently took two men, Ryan Tyler and Ryan Burgess, to the Huntsville prisons. There, God had the opportunity to increase our faith and decrease our fears. We learned to trust God and to follow Him. For me personally I had the joy of watching two “faithful men” (2Tim 2:2) that I am personally discipling, go lead other men who are imprisoned to sin, have the opportunity to trust and follow Christ. Ryan Burgess said as we were leaving the prison, “I won’t be afraid the next time I go.”
An Opportunity for Obedience
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” – John 10:27
There is an opportunity for men to follow the command to go to the “least of these” on May 18 to Bonham, TX. Come and learn to conquer your fears, to ignite your passion to share Christ, and become a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
