This Sunday we will look at the suffering church in Smyrna, Revelation 2:8-11. Do you think it is coincidental that this is one of only two churches that receive no condemnation from Christ, and it is the church under the harshest persecution? What can be made of that fact? Jesus says in verse 9 that He “knows” their tribulation, poverty, and slander. How does Jesus know these things, and is His knowledge of these trials the Christians in Smyrna faced merely a mental knowledge? The promise of verse 11 is that those who conquer will not be hurt by the “second death,” which refers to eternal judgment in hell. This implies that conquerors will indeed be hurt by the first death. What does this tell us about what a conqueror is and is not in Revelation?
